What counts as a "gap"?

Any bucket combination with fewer than 3 matching ideas - below that, it's treated as effectively unexplored within that category, which is also why a cell showing 1 or 2 is still colored as a gap even though it isn't literally empty.

Why can I only pick from certain metrics here?

Only the 14 metrics with a tertile bucket (a low/mid/high classification relative to the scored corpus) can be used here - the grid itself depends on that 3-way split. The other 20 metrics are still fully usable as exact range filters in Smart Filters, just not in this particular low/mid/high grid.

Does a gap mean nobody should build there?

Not necessarily - it means few or no scored ideas currently occupy that combination, which could mean genuine unmet opportunity, or could mean the combination is unrealistic or hard to execute on. It's a starting signal for further research, not a verdict either way.

Why is the grid scoped to one category at a time?

A gap is only meaningful relative to a comparison set - "high automation" means something different within fintech than within consumer apps. Scoping to one category keeps the 9 cells comparable to each other instead of averaging away real differences between categories.
